WHEN THE GUNSHOT RANG out, Lucas knew he wasn’t alone. Someone else is also in Priory Mansion. THAT person—whoever it was—didn’t want him to know its truth. He bends over and grabs the dog from the floor, then rushes through the building towards the front door. Once outside the front door, he places Tucker on the doorstep. A second gunshot rings out, and it sounds closer this time. He looks at the front door over his shoulder only for a moment, then he runs away from the house. The dog is in a greater state of panic, and most of the time Lucas feels himself being pulled by the dog. Outside the massive old gate, Lucas stops a moment to catch his breath. He looks toward the front door, and though he doesn’t see anyone, he feels like someone watches him. Then a moment later, the door slams shut. Although Lucas is over forty meters from the door, that simple action has him in a renewed panic.

Lucas walks fast through the dark street towards his house, then quietly enters it. After locking the front door, he looked through his curtains to make sure they hadn’t followed him. He can feel his heart beat hard in his chest, he feels a cold sweat on his forehead...

Who had fired that gun earlier...?

Lucas glances from his window to look down the street and realises he can’t see much. He walks from the living to the stairs, climbs up, and walks to his bedroom to look again. He sees no one in the street. No lights are on. It’s almost like he imagined the gunshot. There are no people in the street, and no other lights on. He walks through the hallway to the window with the wood covering it, and lifts the wood aside to look at Mrs Whitwell’s house, and sees it’s also covered in darkness. He feels like someone played a cruel joke on him.

Somewhat reluctantly he returns to the bedroom, where he sits down on his bed, and he picks up his phone, which he’d placed minutes earlier on the small cabinet beside his bed. He opens the application to look at the photos he’d taken, and though some were fuzzy, because he’d never mastered taking photos on his phone, unlike Louellen, who apparently did it often.

Lucas looks at all photos but sees no evidence in any of them that there had been someone else in the building with him. He glances at Tucker, who is lying on the floor in a sprawled out posture and still panting hard from the effort of running and walking fast; perhaps also from the apparent panic the dog had experienced when the two gunshots went off. The dog had acted like he smelled, and perhaps also heard, someone in the building. Lucas had to guess that the apparent occupier was some sort of squatter who wanted their identity to stay hidden. Squatting is illegal, and that person might think now that the unexpected visitor, Lucas, would call for the police to investigate the building.
